What gets sampled in an older home

We sample each distinct material you plan to disturb and map where every sample came from.

  • Popcorn and textured ceilings
  • Vinyl floor tile, sheet flooring and mastic
  • Drywall joint compound and wall texture
  • Pipe, duct and boiler insulation
  • Stucco, siding and roofing materials
  • Window putty and caulk
  • Painted windows, doors, trim and cabinets (lead)

Why older homes get tested

  • Asbestos is mainly a concern when materials are disturbed — sanded, scraped, cut or demolished — not when they sit intact.
  • Cal/OSHA treats certain building materials installed before 1981 as presumed to contain asbestos until testing shows otherwise.
  • In California, paint in homes built before 1978 is presumed to be lead-based unless testing shows otherwise. Homes built before 1950 almost always have some.
  • Lead is a particular concern for children under 6 and during pregnancy, especially from chipping paint and dust on window sills and floors.
  • Material that's intact and out of your project's way can often stay put. Testing tells you what's safe to touch.

Most homes have some older materials. What matters is what's in the part you're about to disturb.

Fire cleanup & rebuild

After a fire: the asbestos and lead report your cleanup is waiting on

In Shasta County, fire debris removal can't begin until the county issues a demolition permit, and the county asks property owners to determine whether asbestos is present — through sampling — before applying. Landfills may also ask for sample results before accepting debris. Our Asbestos & Lead Fire Inspection covers that sampling in one visit.

  • Up to 20 asbestos samples, with a 400-point count as necessary
  • Up to 20 XRF lead samples, or 2 paint chip samples
  • Mapping of every sample location, as required
  • 3-day reporting you can share with your contractor and insurance adjuster
  • One flat price: $1,000

Shasta County Building Division handles demolition permits: (530) 225-5761.

We don't do abatement. We just tell you what's there.

If a material tests positive, you have options: leave it undisturbed, cover or enclose it, or have a licensed abatement contractor remove only what your project touches. We have no stake in which you choose — and we can come back for clearance testing when the work is done.

Our Promise

We only test. We do not perform remediation. We do not receive referral fees. You get unbiased results — period.
