DIY settle-plate mold kits will almost always "find mold" — because mold spores are present in virtually all air, indoors and out. What the kits can't tell you is the part that matters: how concentrated the spores are, whether the species indicate an active indoor moisture problem, and how your indoor air compares to the outdoor baseline. That's why a positive DIY kit result creates anxiety without creating an answer.
Why does every DIY kit seem to find mold?
A settle plate is a petri dish left open on a counter. Spores drift down by gravity, land on the growth medium, and colonies appear in a few days. Since normal air contains mold spores, the dish grows something nearly every time — in the cleanest home in Redding. The kit is demonstrating that air exists, not that you have a mold problem.
What can't a DIY kit measure?
Three things professionals consider essential. Concentration: professional air sampling draws a calibrated volume of air (a known number of liters) through a spore trap, so the lab can report spores per cubic meter — a real, comparable number. Comparison: an outdoor control sample taken the same day establishes your local baseline; elevated indoor counts relative to outdoors are what indicate an indoor source. Species identification: an accredited lab identifies which molds are present — some species almost never appear in normal indoor air unless there's an active moisture problem feeding them.
When is a DIY kit good enough?
Honestly: almost never for making a decision. If you can already see mold and you know the moisture source, you don't need any test — you need the leak fixed. If you can't see mold but suspect it, the kit can't locate or quantify it. The one thing a kit reliably produces is a reason to worry, which is the opposite of what you wanted.
What does professional testing actually involve?
An inspector maps moisture with thermal imaging and meters, collects calibrated air samples indoors plus an outdoor control, and sends everything to an accredited laboratory under chain-of-custody documentation. Results come back as species and counts, graded in plain language. A targeted single-room check — the version most parents start with — starts at $297 including lab analysis.
